Mission of the Girls Study Group

The Girls Study Group is an interdisciplinary group of scholars and practitioners convened by OJJDP to develop a comprehensive research foundation for:

  • Understanding girls’ patterns of delinquency, their pathways to and desistance from delinquency; and, the consequences for girls’ involvement in delinquency and the juvenile justice system
  • Identifying the relevant risk and protective factors for timely, targeted and effective intervention to prevent initiation or to promote desistance from delinquency
  • Identifying the gaps in research as it relates to girls and delinquency
  • Effectively communicating the findings both to the research community and to those who have the responsibility to intervene in the lives of girls at risk of or currently involved in delinquent behavior
  • Facilitating the testing and adoption of effective programs and policies designed to meet the needs of girls in context with where they live and where they are developmentally and culturally.
